Are you a mobile homeowner and a wood pellet stove enthusiast? Then you may be considering the question: What is the best pellet stove for mobile home heating?
All Harman and Quadra-Fire pellet stoves are mobile home approved, but that’s not true for all brands on the market. In order for a stove to be approved it must meet the requirements for ASTME 1509, be grounded to the mobile home frame, be bolted to the floor and have outside air attached. You’ll know if a stove meets all of the criteria if it has "mobile home approved" included on its safety label and in its manual.
In this post, we’ll go over the many considerations when installing a mobile home pellet stove, plus our recommendations for making the best choice.
What is a Wood Pellet Stove?
A wood pellet stove is a heating appliance that burns a renewable biomass fuel called pellets. Pellets are uniform cylinders of composite biomass fuel that are loaded into a stove hopper and automatically fed into the stove burn pot creating a steady, warming fire.
Pellet heating appliances are available as freestanding stoves or fireplace inserts, with a wide range of sizes, controls and aesthetics. A freestanding stove is placed on the floor on a non-combustible surface, such as tile or stone.
The pellets used are made of compressed wood fiber, left over from the lumber mills and forestry industries. Premium pellets are made 100% from hardwood or softwood and don’t contain additives. Using pure, premium pellets comes with many added benefits: They won’t attract insects or other pests, burn cleaner than other heating fuels such as gas, produce less ash and are moisture-free. The last thing you want are moist pellets. Not only can moisture degrade the pellet, causing it to burn less efficiently (if at all), but damp pellets clog up the hopper in your stove.
How do I Install a Pellet Stove in my Mobile Home?
First, we’d like to remind you that pellet stove installation must be done by a professional. During your purchase, ask the dealer if the stove comes with installation or if it's a service you can add on. While most dealers offer it, there are also many many independent professional installers. Your dealer can refer you to an expert.
Step 1: Check your insurance. Is your pellet stove approved for mobile home heating?
Step 2: Map out a realistic budget for your project. Do your planned purchase costs align with your budget? Consider the unit’s price as well as the cost of fuel, venting, installation and a hearth pad. Consult with your dealer to get a final breakdown of the cost.
Step 3: Determine the size and type of pellet stove that’s right for your space. Commonly pellet stoves call for two to four inches of clearance on all sides.
Step 4: Does your mobile home already have a fireplace? If so, you’ll need a pellet stove insert, which is installed in the hearth and vented through the chimney using a venting kit.
Step 5: Install your pellet stove for an even heating experience. Seeing that most mobile homes have a similar floor plan, you’ll install your stove in the living room, an optimal central location.
Step 6: You’ll also need to consider the two-inch aluminum intake pipe and fireproof insulation-wrapped vent pipe. If you’re installing the stove vertically, the pipes will exit through the roof, If you plan on a horizontal installation, they’ll exit through the wall. Will you need to purchase heat-resistant insulation for around the vent pipe? To learn more, check out our blog post, How to Properly Vent a Pellet Stove.
